COACH OF THE YEAR
In the history of our football program, Evangel has had the privilege of having three of its coaches receiving the honor of coach of the year. Leadership on and off the field of play is critical to the success of the young men who are part of the program and how they will lead their future lives and families.
Denny Duron - 1991
In 1991, The Lousiana Sports Writers named Pastor/Coach Denny Duron as the Louisiana Coach of the Year. This was yet another honor given to a decorated coach and player who has more passion for Jesus than any accolades he has achieved on the football field.
Denny led the LA. Tech Bulldogs to two national championships as quarterback. He was drafted into the USFL playing for two years and then transitioned to the NFL with Washington Redskins for one season before chasing his true passion which was the ministry.
He coached at Evangel University in Springfield Missouri before returning home to Shreveport to pioneer the football program here at Evangel Christian Academy.
Dennis Dunn - 1993
After the program was off the ground, Pastor/Coach Denny Duron sought a young coach who could take the program to the next level. Dennis Dunn was that man. In 1993, the Lousiana Sports Writers named Coach Dunn, the coach of the year. But, Dunn was really just getting warmed up. He lead Evangel to nine state titles and one National Championship in 1999.
Coach Dunn was a stickler for details and began every practice with a Bible study. He always promoted character and integrity into the young men in the program. He went on to coach at Louisiana College and Pineville High.
Byron Dawson - 2016-2017
Dawson graduated from Evangel in 1997, after a stellar high school career winning multiple state championships as a talented defensive tackle. He played collegiately at LSU for four years under Gerry Dinardo and Nick Saban.
After earning his degree at LSU, Dawson began coaching. It wasn't long before Evangel hired him as defensive coordinator. He then transitioned to head coach in 20012. In 2016, he was named the USA Today ALL-USA Coach of the Year. He was also named Coach of the year by the Louisiana High School Coaches Association in 2017.
